Chaplaincy Course: how to become a chaplain, anywhere in the world
Chaplains offer spiritual care and a caring presence to people in hospitals, prisons, schools, the armed forces, workplaces and many other places. This course will guide you from your calling to your service.
Your path, step by step
- Confirm your calling. Pray, seek counsel and talk with your pastor or spiritual leaders.
- Be authorised by your church. Most employers and organisations ask for endorsement or authorisation from your church or a recognised faith body.
- Choose where you want to serve. Hospital, hospice, prison, police and emergency services, military, school or university, workplace, sports or your local community.
- Get trained. For example Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) or other chaplaincy training recognised where you live.
- Check the rules in your country. Requirements, qualifications and background checks differ from country to country and from employer to employer.
- Start by volunteering. Serve in a local team to gain experience and references.
- Apply and keep growing. Apply for chaplaincy roles and keep learning, with good supervision and self-care.
